In the lead-up to Henrik Ibsen’s 200th birthday, New American Ensemble’s 2027 season will present two of his late and rarely produced masterworks, The Lady from the Sea and The Master Builder, in rotating repertory — allowing audiences to encounter a different story night to night, and to experience the two plays in direct conversation with one another.
Connected by the crossover character Hilde Wangel, these two works form one of the most fascinating dialogues in Ibsen’s canon. This will be the first time The Lady from the Sea and The Master Builder have been presented together on the North American continent, with The Lady from the Sea not seen on a New York City stage since 1987.
Directed by Artistic Director Michael DeFilippis, the production will feature an ensemble of returning NAE actors and designers alongside a new group of collaborators representing the highest caliber of talent in New York City.

Across America, the dominant theater model relies on ticket sales, short rehearsal periods, and the pressure to chase trends in order to survive. The result is little room for creative risk, sustained artistic practice, or meaningful community engagement. Artists are too often treated as disposable contractors, moving from job to job without stability, continuity, or the conditions required to create work of lasting impact.
What often goes unseen is that the work itself suffers when its makers are stretched, stressed, and unstable.
